Edge of Free debut record reviewed in The Pit by Twitch!
Nashville’s Edge of Free released their debut, self-titled album on May 19 and The Pit gave it a whirl. After all, super producer Toby Wright (Alice in Chains, Korn, Tantric, and Metallica, to name a few) was in the booth!
Edge of Free contains an intimate collection of semi-autobiographical songs, originating from longtime friend’s guitarist John Hussey and vocalist Scott Sneddon. Depression and drug addiction are just two of the themes on Edge of Free and the candid anguish, true ardor and honest emotion and are as tangible as the instruments used to record the tracks. The minimalist, robust vocals, acoustic feel with excellent production value suit the subject matter.
With brutal and frank candor, songs like “Blood Eagle,” “Pushin’ the Needle,” and first single “Pony” take the listener on a journey of ups and down and overcoming the struggles in life! As Sneddon states, “Pony is really a dark horse. It’s a story about some truly dark times in my life mixed with some of my favorite memories, hidden in a light-hearted melody – all of which really occurred in Nashville. In one sense, the video is a similar transformation as the song itself – it’s really us doing what we love, no acting, no scripted parts, just channeling the ghost the whole time!”
This album is a cathartic, cleansing endeavor and the music and lyrics echo that. The acoustic prominence and strong passionate vocals combined with the lyrical subject matter make this album unique and tremendous. I have added Edge of Free to my personal playlist and that is rare. Edge of Free definitely discovered their own niche (perhaps genre?) and this unique offering purges and purifies with every listen. One of the best I’ve reviewed in 2017, go check it out….that’s an order!
